Diabetic Foot Care: Why Every Day Matters

Diabetes puts your feet at special risk. Simple daily habits and regular podiatric checkups prevent most serious complications.

Why diabetes is hard on feet

Over time, elevated blood sugar can damage both the nerves in your feet (peripheral neuropathy) and the blood vessels that supply them (peripheral artery disease). Neuropathy means you may not feel a blister, cut, or pressure sore forming; reduced circulation means those small injuries heal slowly and can become serious infections.

This combination is why diabetic foot ulcers are so dangerous, and why they're largely preventable with attentive care.

Your daily routine

Inspect your feet every day: tops, soles, and between the toes. Use a mirror or ask a family member for help if needed. You're looking for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or nail problems.

Wash your feet daily in lukewarm (never hot) water, dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes, and moisturize the tops and soles, but not between the toes. Never walk barefoot, even indoors, and check the inside of your shoes before putting them on.

What we do at your checkups

Regular podiatric visits catch problems before you can feel them. We perform comprehensive diabetic foot exams, Doppler vascular testing to assess circulation, and nerve testing for neuropathy. We also provide professional nail and callus care, a common source of injury when done at home, and expert wound care if an ulcer does develop.

If you have diabetes and haven't had a foot exam in the past year, call (718) 232-2100. Medicare and most insurance plans cover diabetic foot care.
