Heel pain shouldn't be part of your morning
If your first steps out of bed are the most painful of the day, you may have plantar fasciitis, and it's very treatable. Our dedicated Heel Pain Center combines proven conservative care with EPAT shockwave therapy for pain that won't quit.
What's causing your heel pain?
Plantar fasciitis
The most common cause of heel pain. The plantar fascia, the band of tissue running from your toes through your arch to your heel bone, becomes inflamed and painful, especially with the first steps of the morning.
Overpronation
When your foot rolls too far inward as you walk, the arch flattens and the plantar fascia stretches and strains with every step. Over time, this repeated stress leads to inflammation and chronic pain.
Heel spurs
A calcium deposit that builds up on the heel bone, often alongside long-standing plantar fasciitis. Many people have spurs without pain; it's the inflamed tissue around them that usually hurts.
How we treat it
Conservative care first
Most heel pain responds to conservative treatment: anti-inflammatory medication, icing, targeted stretching exercises, and physical therapy. We start with the simplest approach that works.
Custom orthotics
Professionally cast orthotics correct overpronation at its source, supporting your arch so the plantar fascia can finally heal instead of being re-injured with every step.
EPAT shockwave therapy
When heel pain persists, EPAT (Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment) uses acoustic pressure waves to boost circulation and accelerate your body's own healing. Non-invasive, no anesthesia, no downtime. Treatment takes minutes in our office.
Why choose our Heel Pain Center?
Dr. Corinne Kauderer, DPM has treated heel pain in Brooklyn for 30 years. Because we diagnose the underlying cause, not just the symptom, most patients find lasting relief without surgery. Heel pain is often successfully treated with conservative measures, and when it isn't, EPAT gives us a powerful non-surgical next step.
Frequently asked questions
- When should I see a podiatrist for heel pain?
- If heel pain is affecting the way you walk, is worse with your first steps in the morning, or has not improved with rest and supportive shoes, it is time to schedule an evaluation.
- Why does my heel hurt most in the morning?
- That first-step pain is the classic sign of plantar fasciitis. The tissue along the bottom of your foot tightens overnight, then stretches painfully when you stand. It is very treatable, especially caught early.
- Can heel pain be treated without surgery?
- Almost always. Most heel pain responds to conservative care such as stretching, supportive footwear, and custom orthotics. When it does not, EPAT shockwave therapy offers a non-surgical next step.
- Does Dr. Kauderer offer shockwave therapy for heel pain?
- Yes. For certain chronic soft-tissue conditions, EPAT shockwave therapy may be recommended when conservative treatments have not provided enough relief.
